Johnson House :: Design is a cutting edge furniture and home design studio based in Seattle. At Johnson House :: Design we combine design, manufacturing, and custom software to build highly customizable furniture and decor.
Our first product is Flat Clock, a web customizable wall clock. Flat Clock is customizable online through Johnson House's self-coded design interface. Clock designs are based upon a randomizable Voronoi pattern with a near infinite number of possible end designs.
Our mission at Johnson House :: Design is to utilize web technology, cutting edge software, and digital fabrication equipment to produce customizable home decor and furniture. We are developing an entire line of home furnishings that will be customizable though a single unified website. When completed, this line will include tables, storage, benches, chairs, and credenzas. The design interface will allow for dimensional, material, and design feature customization. Additionally, the design interface will allow for the coordination of design elements between individual pieces.
The availability of easily customizable furniture will vastly increase the number of design options available for the average person and professional designer. Customizable furniture will allow the average person to create and design without the need to learn complex design software or manufacturing technologies. Professional designers will be able to create custom pieces rapidly and affordably.
Besides the obvious coolness factor, custom furniture can offer high performance solutions for everyday living problems. Custom furniture can be made to fit exactly in a tight space, hold just the right number of items, or be just the right height.
Through the usage of advanced inventory tracking and adaptive solving algorithms material waste can be minimized. The system under development will track the dimensions and properties of each piece of scrap material ever produced by the factory. When a new furniture design is ordered by a customer, the inventory tracking system will review the entire database of available materials and assemble the most efficient combination of both new and scrap materials to be used in the furniture design. If scrap materials from other factories or reclaimed materials are entered into the inventory database the system will become hyper-efficient, allowing for a minimum of new material usage.
Nick Johnson is the technical lead and founder of Johnson House :: Design. Nick focuses on algorithmic design and browser-based design interfaces. Flatclock.com is entirely hand coded by Nick and is his first commercial design product. Presently, he is designing Flatline, an open source design and manufacturing software program that will be the backbone of Johnson House :: Design's custom furniture line.
